Can You Put a Pizza Box in the Oven?

Reheating pizza in the oven using a pizza box may seem like a convenient option and is practically possible, but it is not a wise decision to make. Pizza boxes are only designed for carrying pizzas, not for using reheating purposes.

The materials in the pizza box are flammable and can quickly catch fire at high temperatures, which can increase the risk of accidents or injuries.

In this guide, I have outlined the potential outcomes of heating your pizza box in the oven and offered some valuable advice on how you can do it if you intend to do so.

Can You Put a Pizza Box in the Oven?

No, I won’t recommend putting a pizza box in the oven to reheat pizza because a pizza box is highly flammable, especially a cardboard pizza box. It can probably catch fire, particularly at 400°F (204°C), and the oil from the pizza will help to burn it quickly.

Additionally, the materials, chemicals, and ink found in the pizza boxes are not safe for consumption and may release their substances to some extent when exposed to high temperatures.

If you don’t have an oven-safe plate, consider choosing a baking sheet or aluminium foil to reheat the pizza safely at the appropriate temperature.

What Happens if You Put a Pizza Box in the Oven?

Putting a pizza box in the oven can lead to several consequences, including health and accidental risks, or potential damage to the oven.

Pizza boxes are made of cardboard, which is a combustible material and it increases the risk of catching fire at high temperatures, probably at 400-427°F (204-219°C).

Also, the ink, chemicals, and adhesive that are used in producing pizza boxes may release harmful substances and can contaminate the pizza during heating at high temperatures.

Moreover, you can smell foul odors of the cardboard and ink while heating the pizza, and it can significantly affect its taste and flavor.

In case the pizza box catches fire and burns, it will damage the oven in no time and increase the potential risk of hazards such as accidents, injuries, etc.

What Temperature Can You Put a Pizza Box in the Oven?

Based on what I’ve noticed, you can place a pizza box in the oven to reheat the pizza at a temperature range of 170-200°F (77-93°C) to be safe, although the pizza box can tolerate heat up to a temperature of 400-427°F (204-219°C).

I suggest setting your oven to its lowest temperature setting and monitoring it closely until the pizza reaches your desired level of heat.

How to Reheat Pizza in a Box in the Oven?

Although I wouldn’t recommend heating the pizza box in the oven, if you are determined to do so, these instructions may help you to accomplish it.

  • Switch on your oven and adjust the temperature to its lowest possible setting, between 170-200°F (77-93°C).
  • Put the pizza under the baking sheet in the pizza box, and cover it with aluminum foil to avoid direct heat from the oven.
  • Place the pizza box on the lowest rack of the oven, and reheat the pizza for 15-20 minutes, depending on the wattage of the oven and your desired level of heat.
  • While heating, observe the pizza closely for safety and precaution.
  • Once it’s done, remove the pizza box immediately from the oven, and keep it at room temperature.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can You Put a Pizza Box in the Oven at 200°F?

Yes, putting the pizza box in the oven at 200°F (93°C) is generally considered safe, but do not let it exceed 400°F (204°C), as it could easily ignite and catch fire.

How Long Can You Keep Pizza Warm in the Oven?

In my experiment, I found that pizza can stay warm in the oven for around 30 minutes without any covering. However, when covered with aluminum foil, it can stay warm for 3 hours or longer.

What Oven Temperature Is Safe for Pizza Boxes?

An oven temperature between 170 to 200 degrees Fahrenheit or 77 to 93 degrees Celcius is safe for pizza boxes to warm up. However, it is important to prevent the temperature rise to 400° F, as pizza boxes are highly flammable and can easily catch fire under such conditions.

What to Do if the Pizza Box Catches Fire in the Oven?

If the fire catches in the oven due to the pizza box, immediately switch off the oven, and let it extinguish itself or you can use a fire extinguisher to put out the fire.

Do not open the door of the oven, as oxygen can fuel the fire more, and as a result, it can cause the fire to explode into a blast if you are unlucky.

To sum it up, keeping a pizza box in the oven for warming up is not recommended at all unless it is necessary.

Pizza box contains flammable material that catches fire to an extent, which can create certain hazardous situations such as accidents, injuries, etc. To avoid such situations, it is better to use aluminum foil or a baking sheet to warm up the pizza in the oven.
